Joseph Small flies the flag for Wasps at the Midland Champs

Congratulations to Joseph Small who put in two stunning performances at the Midlands Age Groups Championships at Coventry on 5th and 11th June

The Midland Championships is a prestigious regional long course competition which brings together the best young swimmers from across the nine counties that make up both East and West Midlands. To compete you have to meet the tough entry times at a licensed competition, which is an achievement in itself. This year Joseph Small, aged just 10 swam extremely well in the Shropshire County Championships and qualified for the Midlands in both the 100m and 200m Backstroke. The Championships themselves are held in a 50m pool in Coventry and provide that extra challenge of competing in a pool twice the length of the one you normally train in.

But none of this deterred Joseph who swam brilliantly to come 7th in the 100m and 9th in the 200m, both in personal best times of 1:24.82 and 2:58.15 respectively. Club Coach Steve Archdeacon was delighted with Joseph’s results: “Joseph performed fantastically well at this, his first long course competition and I have been very impressed by his commitment to swimming and his mature approach at such a young age.”
