Wrexham Junior Sprint Gala 15th Nov 2008

I’ve just spent a day with the most well behaved and well mannered children I could have wished to be with. Many of the swimmers were competing in their first major gala and were understandably nervous. The more experienced swimmers deserve to be thanked for their help and encouragement with the newcomers.

The overall results were really encouraging, showing the great potential of these youngsters. Josh Edge, James Cooke and Hayden Ciesielski showed their abilities in collecting a number of top placings in several events. Philippa Lane achieved her first medal – not bad at the age of 8!

P.B’s were amassed by the minute. I still don’t think Lukas Edge quite believes he managed to shave a whooping 11 seconds off his P.B! No one left without at least 1 new P.B. Welsh swimming laws are slightly different in that they allow 8 year old competitors, and we barely had the chance to say “how cute to see such tiny people waiting to start” before Bridie Buckingham, Antoinette Greenwood and Joseph Small were at the finish. All I can say to that is “Watch out Shropshire, swimming dynamos in training!”

I would also like to say a huge thank you to Lyn Towers for organising the gala; she made it very easy for all attending to know what they were doing. Also a big vote of thanks to Robyn Jamieson and Emma Edge for their poolside assistance. I think it is very important to point out that all the Wasp helpers give up their own time to make things happen for the Club.

Once again let me say how proud I am to be involved with such an enthusiastic, keen and most importantly, ‘nice’ bunch of children.
