Wasps Storm to Second in Crusader League Gala

At a packed Whitchurch Pool on Saturday 4th February our swimmers took on the might of Oakengates, Newport and Newcastle – in Round 2 of the Crusader League.

After 2 hours of battling it out in the water, we ended the gala with our swimmers having achieved 19 Personal best times and having smashed 2 long standing club records. In the process we achieved second place – reducing the point differential between ourselves and Oakengates from the previous round.

The final point tally was as follows: Oakengates 211; Whitchurch 179; Newcastle 163; Newport 112.

Rachel Hares led the way in event one with a crusading and inspirational victory in the 100m Open Ladies IM in a time of 1:13.41. Later on she also won the 100m Breastroke.

In Event 10 - the Open Men’s 100m Backstroke - Philip Austin came first in 1:11.32.

The stage was set for “Smoking” Joe Evans (too hot to handle!) to win the 14/u Boys 50m Freestyle. Win he did in a new fantastic, blistering PB time of 0:27.67.

Our 12/u Boys Freestyle relay team of Sam Evans, Josh Edge, Sam Holland and Thomas Penn took first place in the 4*2. They then went onto to also win the 4*2 Medley Relay.

Our Open Ladies 4*2 Medley relay team of Charlotte Archdeacon, Charlotte Evans, Rachel Hares and Charlotte Taylor also took the numero uno position. They too went onto win the 4*2 Freestyle relay.
Charlotte Archdeacon went on to win the Open Ladies 100m Freestyle in 1:08.09.

Our 10/u boys medley relay team of Ellis Hickson, Charlie Lane, Alfie Pardoe and Ed Reid then ripped through the water to win the number one spot. What is going on at the Wasps??? We finally have a 10/u Boys team winning. Bring on the junior galas!

Alfie Pardoe dominated the 10/u boys 25m backstroke from start to finish in a PB time of 20.09. This was a new Club record for a 9 year old beating James McKeon’s previous record of 0:20.29 which was set at the Club Championships back in 1986. In the 25m Fly Alfie also recorded a new PB of 0:19.48 - annihilating the previous Club 25m Fly record of 0:21.11, previously held by Nikolas Torrens  and set as far back as 1993. Two long standing Club records smashed and pummelled in one night.

Josh Edge won the 12/u Boys 50m Freestyle in a time of 0:36.32.

The next gala is not until after the county Championships in April – so plenty of time for improvements and for others to force their way into the reckoning. Make no mistake all places in the team are up for grabs. We want to win!!!
