Wasps Collect Medals at Wrexham Junior Sprint Meet July 18th

The Wasps sent a record number of 35 young swimmers to this year’s Wrexham Junior Sprint Meet. For some this was their first ever experience of a gala and with the spectator stands being packed to capacity the atmosphere must have been somewhat daunting to many.

Swimming Clubs, from as far a field as Milton Keynes, had sent swimmers to compete in this prestigious gala, and I’m pleased that despite the very stiff competition all of our young swimmers performed well.

There can be no doubt that the Wasps Swimmer of the day was Abi Fawcett who won the girls 11/u gold medal in the 50m breastroke; bronze medals in the 50m backstroke and 50m fly; and came 5th in the 50m freestyle.

She was closely followed in the performance and medal stakes by Joshua Edge who secured the boys 10/u silver medal in the 25m fly; a bronze medal in the 25m backstroke; and secured joint 4th place in the 25m freestyle.

Alfie Pardoe won the bronze medal in the 8/u boys 25m backstroke; and came 6th in the 25m breastroke.

Nicki Latham came in 6th in the girls 11/u fly.

Surprise to some, maybe even to himself, but not to those who have seen him swim, Ellis Hickson secured the 6th place medal in the 8/u boys backstroke.

Most of our other swimmers secured Personal Best times in many events and gained valuable experience.

The day finished off with a trip to Pizza Hut, where 30 hungry and tired swimmers devoured copious amounts of marguerita pizzas, garlic bread, potato wedges and numerous trips to the ice cream factory.
A big thanks to all parents who assisted in driving swimmers in the morning and in keeping some order on the coach and at Pizza Hut.
