Wasps Secure 2nd Place at Round 2 of Crusader Gala

Round 2 of the Crusader League kicked off on Saturday 1st April with eager and enthusiastic anticipation. But this was not a day for April Fools. The Wasps were in the home water of Whitchurch Pool entertaining Dane Valley, Newport and the Biddulph B team, and needed to make up ground having come 3rd in Round 1.

The spectator area was packed to the rafters with the expectation of what lay ahead – and our swimmers rose to the occasion. Spirited by the return of one of our star swimmers Todd Smallbone, the Wasps ended the gala in a much improved 2nd Place with 231 points and displayed a positive and professional approach from start to finish. A new sense of self belief and confidence was on display for all to see and  team morale was excellent.

Out of the 51 events we came first or second in more than half, and individual recognition should be given to Charlotte Archdeacon, Thomas Draper, Robert Flack, and Hannah Gilbert who achieved numero uno position in one or more of their respective races. As did the 12u boys freestyle and medley, and the 14/u girls medley relay teams. The difference between winning and losing in some of the events was down to fractions, and provides inspiration for future victories. Right up to the last few events it was neck and neck for 2nd place between us and Newport who were swimming in the next lane – but we deservedly held our nerve and pulled away in the points tally.

So it’s definitely a case of onwards and upwards to Round 3 at Newport on May 6th. Success is about incremental improvements and if each of our swimmers can improve by just one position from 2nd to 1st, from 3rd to 2nd or from 4th to 3rd we can win. We need to continue to develop our positive mental attitude – success must become the norm. As each of our swimmers stands on the blocks ready to start their race they must focus only on the positive thoughts of victory. Roll on May 6th – let the battle recommence.
