2006 Shropshire County Championships - Day 1
Wasps off to a flying start - Charlotte Arcdeacon & Dominic Horbury Win Gold
Whitchurch Wasps got off to a flying start on the first day of the Shropshire County Championships. Out of a total of 22 swims in the 6 events on day one Wasp swimmers achieved a fantastic 3 Gold and 6 Bronze medals. Personal Best (PB) times were recorded in 14 of the races.
Charlotte Archdeacon took the championships by storm - winning double gold – this on day one alone. What is in store over the forthcoming 5 days of competition? If she carries on at this rate she’ll be crowned Queen of Shropshire. First off she took the Gold in the 100m Individual Medley (IM) in a winning time of 1:15.25. This was a whole 3 ½ seconds faster than her personal best. Later on in the day she managed to knock an even more impressive 5 seconds off her PB in the 200m backstroke in a time of 2:40.82 – thereby securing her second Gold of the day.
Equally impressive Dominic Horbury (pictured left) achieved the third Wasps Gold of the day in the men’s 200 freestyle – dominating the race in a time of 2:29.51. Fantastic!
Matthew Everett took bronze in the100m backstroke, whilst Jamie Taylor and Philip Austin both took secured PB’s and bronze medals in the 200m freestyle.
In the women’s events Laura Austin took bronze in the 100m IM, whilst Charlotte Taylor and Stephanie Griffiths both secured bronze medals in the 200m backstroke, with Charlotte taking nearly 4 seconds off her PB.
Other Wasp swimmers knocked seconds off their previous best times:
In the Women’s 100m IM Abi Fawcett knocked over 6 seconds off her PB, Bryony Archdeacon reduced her PB by over 9 seconds, Lucy Lawledge-Evans by 2 ½ seconds and Nicki Latham secured a PB time of 1:35.77.
In the women’s 200m backstroke Abi Fawcett also knocked a collossal 26 seconds off her PB.
In the Mens 200m Freestyle Joshua Edge and Ben Williams showed massive improvements - taking around 30 seconds off their respective PB times. Joe Evans reduced his PB by nearly 18 seconds, and James Portch took off 10 seconds to get below 3 minutes.
A great first day – lets hope Wasps can keep up their winning efforts tomorrow...Go on you Wasps!!!!
