Young swimmers normally start off in the stroke development with two to three hours of training per week. Here they improve their strokes and build up their stamina. At this stage within the Wasps we strongly advise that swimmers also continue with their usual swimming lessons.
The next step up from the stroke development is Improvers. Promotion to Improvers takes place on a purely judge by results, meritocratic basis. Every 3 months the club organises time trials and swimmers who attain the appropriate time trial qualifications then move up a lane, from Improvers to Challengers and then to Elite. Further pool and coaching time is allocated as swimmers progress through the lanes.
Time Trial Qualifications
Swimmers are tested on 50m times in all strokes at time trials held throughout the year and lane placement is based on the results.
Stroke Development | | This is the lane in which most young swimmers start. | | Key | Improvers 2 | BK-56 BR-63 FLY-62 FC-50 | must have times for 3 of 4 strokes | | BK | Backstroke | Improvers 1 | BK-52 BR-59 FLY-58 FC-46 | must have 3 of the indicated times and WASPS 1 | | BR | Breaststroke | Challengers 2 | BK-47 BR-52 FLY-50 FC-39 | must have 3 of the indicated times | | FLY | Butterfly | Challengers 1 | BK-42 BR-46 FLY-43 FC-34 | must have 3 of the indicated times, 1200m T20 and WASPS 2 | | FC | Frontcrawl | Elite 2 | BK-38 BR-40 FLY-36 FC-32 | must have 3 of the 50m times and 1350m T20 | | T20 | Distance swam in 20 minutes | Elite 1 | BK-34 BR-38 FLY-33 FC-30 | must have 2 of the 50m indicated times and 1450m T20 | | | |
